Approximately 40 minutes from the centre of Athens, we travel to the town of Marathon. In 490BC one of the most glorious moments in Greek history was written, in the Marathon Valley during the Greek-Persian war. The Athenian’s together with their allies, even though smaller in number, were able to defeat the Persian king Darius. The Athenian known as Pheidippidis, ran the distance between Marathon and Athens, to deliver the news of the victory. Hence the inspiration for the modern sporting event ‘The Marathon’, which has an official distance of 42.195km
